PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The contribution of Italy, and particularly the area of Tuscany, to the world's culture is extraordinary. Tuscany is at the heart of the Italian Renaissance, a center of social and artistic expression, and as the center of the Roman Empire of extreme historical importance. The profusion of suitable subjects for photography and artisitic expression makes this program an excellent opportunity for the working photographer to learn and extend their technical abilities as well as learn to approach their work in a new and different environment. Part of doing photography is learning how to approach people and subjects with interest and humanity, something that can't be taught in the classroom. An overseas workshop experience is an ideal venue for that sort of experiential learning. Learning about the cultural differences amongst people in other lands is vital to the modern college graduate. In addition to these field experiences, time will be devoted to reading and discussing local history and culture. There will also be an opportunity to learn how to prepare local food, which will be incorporated into the documentary module and recorded through food photography. There will be both supervised and free time for visits to world famous museums and galleries. Contacts with local working photographers and other people involved in photography will enhance the experience. In the Documentary Course (TEC 3412) appropriate lectures regarding the organization and execution of a significant documentary project that includes both images and writing will be presented. Each student will complete a project and submit it at the end of the first session of summer school. This will contribute to their final grade. The Field Experience Course (TEC 3332) will focus on the use of digital imaging, proper use of digital controls, and the principles of color landscape and/or architectural photography. A portfolio of images will be submitted by the end of the first session of summer school so that a final grade can be given. If you would like more programmatic information not included in this standardized description, please contact the program leaders directly.
