Semester/Year Programs
Plan Early, Plan Now
The most important aspect of your successful study abroad experience is that you start planning for it as early as possible--and the first semester of your freshman year is not too soon. More about planning >>
Available Programs
- Appalachian's exchange and study abroad programs are the result of direct linkages with more than 30 overseas institutions where you can study; these may be exchange or study abroad programs. This is the best place to start looking for programs, but you are not limited to these.
- University of North Carolina Exchange Program (UNCEP) offers exchange opportunities to NC students in at least seven countries (new programs are being added continually) while paying tuition at one's home university. This is an excellent and affordable opportunity, which provides a wide variety of choices.
- International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) is a membership organization of 225 institutions in the US and abroad dedicated to the principle that a period of study abroad should be available and affordable to all students regardless of their financial situation. Students participating in an ISEP exchange pay tuition, room and board at their home institution. ISEP provides exchange opportunities in 35 countries on 5 continents. A note on competitive programs: Each ISEP program description includes the "AP ratio;" this is the key to how competitive that placement is: A=applications, i.e. the number of students who selected that institution as their first choice; P=placement, i.e. how many students were actually placed there through ISEP.
- StudyAbroad.com offers information about other external programs that offer study abroad opportunities to any student who meets their admission requirements. If you have reviewed all of Appalachian's direct programs, ISEP, and UNCEP and still have not found a program that is academically appropriate for you, take a look at what StudyAbroad.com has to offer.
Costs and Financial Planning
There are many programs that cost about the same as living in Boone and attending Appalachian-the only added expense is travel, insurance, and administrative costs; there are also programs that cost much more. You can apply most scholarships and financial aid to your study abroad costs when you participate in programs affiliated with Appalachian.
