Exchange Students - Specific Information

The Office of International Education & Development welcomes you to Boone, NC and Appalachian State University.   At Appalachian State University, the Office of International Education & Development provides a wide range of services for exchange students and is a primary resource for all.  This office assists all international students and scholars in matters concerning orientation, housing, visa regulations, insurance, travel and medical information.

Course Registration for International Exchange Students

Incoming exchange students cannot register themselves for Appalachian courses from overseas. The Office of International Education and Development coordinates registration in collaboration with the different departments. An official transcript is required to determine whether students have met the requirements to enroll in specific courses.

To help us better assist students; program coordinators for exchange students should please verify their students have submitted a complete application with a COPY OF THEIR PASSPORTS, and the ORIGINAL and the ENGLISH TRANSLATION (if applicable) of their official graduate and undergraduate transcripts.

Regardless of their degree program at their home institution, all exchange students MUST be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credits for undergraduate students and 9 credits for graduate students, usually the equivalent of 4 courses. Enrollment in preferred courses is not guaranteed. It is subject to departmental approval, availability of courses, capacity, and prerequisites.

Students MUST submit a list of preferred courses preferably Seven OR MORE and a list of alternative courses just in case some of the preferred courses are not offered or are full. Having the alternative courses helps us work more efficiently on registration.

Exchange students will meet with an advisor from The Office of International Education and Development regarding their course registration during the week of orientation.

Application Materials for Incoming Exchange Students (pdf 361K)

We appreciate receiving students’ applications by the priority deadline if possible. Appalachian State University is one of the few U.S. institutions that registers exchange students for their courses prior to their arrival on campus. The earlier we receive applications, the faster we can register students.

Program coordinators should email the completed application with all supporting materials for each student in a PDF format to studyabroad@appstate.edu.  Program coordinators should indicate each student's name in the subject line.  Please do not email multiple students' application in one file.

Visas for Exchange Students

Exchange student who do not hold a U.S. passport will receive a DS-2019 from the Office of International Education and Development or from their sponsoring organization, such as ISEP.  Students should use this DS-2019 to apply for a J Student visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

For more information about J-1 Visas for exchange students read the international student handbook.
