The Office of International Education and Development (OIED) is committed to providing international students with opportunities to explore life outside the classroom and to connect to the community. If you as an international student are having trouble finding ways to participate in activities outside of class, OIED would be happy to direct you to activities, clubs and organizations that match your interests. Here are just a samlpe of the opportunities available to international students:
International Coffee Hour
International Coffee Hour is an event where international students, U.S. students, faculty, staff and the community can enjoy food, entertainment and conversation together.
Here’s the what, when, where:
Where: Whitewater Cafe (room 220 of the student union)
When: 12:30-2:30 EVERY Friday, beginning September 12.
What: Whitewater will be open to the public during those times, so coffee hour will be a
drop in, mill about and talk to people affair. There will be free food, free coffee, music and images.
How: Each week a different group will host coffee hour. That group will be in charge of bringing pot luck food, providing music and any visuals/ information.
"This, too, is America"
“This, too, is America” is a series of optional evening classes and short trips offered once a month to introduce international students to unique aspects of U.S. culture. ASU students and local community members teach the classes. You can download the schedule for Fall 2009 here: Fall 2009 This, too, is America Schedule. Host families
Get connected to the community! Sign up for a host family through the International Connections program or go to the International Connections' "Excursions" page.
App Peers
App Peers is a program run by INTAPP. An App Peer is an ASU student who is matched with an international student. The APP Peer helps the international student adjust to the ASU campus. To sign up to have an APP Peer, fill out this from: App Peer Application (DOC 24K).
International Educational Week November 16-20, 2009
"International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States" (http://www.iew.state.gov/) .
Clubs and Organizations
- INTAPP - International Appalachian, the student organization that promotes internationalization on campus.
- AppPeers pairs an International ASU student with a Domestic ASU student to encourage friendship and interaction between the two groups throughout the stay of the International student. Contact INTAPP for more information.
- International Friendship Association (IFA) is an organization designed for the international students at ASU to take on leadership positions and get involved on campus with events, intramural sports, and other activities. Contact INTAPP for more information.
