AS•U•GO - Global Outreach / Cultural Speakers Bureau

As you go into the Classroom... As you go into the Community... As you go Abroad...

AS•U•GO - Appalachian State University's Cultural Speaker's Bureau is composed of volunteer students and scholars from many world cultures who bring with them a wealth of cultural expertise and life experiences to share with our U.S. classrooms and community. These students and scholars are available to visit your university classroom, community, or educational organization.

International Outreach assists faculty and teachers with identifying and coordinating cultural presentations, panel discussions, cultural simulations, interactive dialogues, cultural arts, or related intercultural programs involving AS•U•GO Cultural Speakers Bureau participants.

Why Invite International Speakers into your Classroom?

  • International, bii-cultural, and study abroad returnee students can provide authentic perspectives and experiences on cultural topics and issues.
  • Experiential interactive dialogue “We remember 90% of what we both say and do” (Bruce Hyland’s Cone of Learning” - Edgar Hale)
  • Stimulate dialogue, debate, cultural sharing, and collaborative curriculum projects - engage students’ experiences as curriculum material.
  • Inspire U.S. students to study languages as well as consider the possibilities of education, travel, or work abroad opportunities.

Request a Speaker or international outreach program , and you will be contacted by International Outreach within 2-4 days.

International Outreach also coordinates day-long "World Culture Days" programs with with our regional public schools.   AS•U•GO stimulates children’s curiosity to explore other cultures, study other languages and consider future education abroad opportunities through face-to-face interactions with our speakers who are from all over the world, including the U.S.

The person-to-person interactions that occur between AS•U•GO speakers and K-12 students represent a powerful intercultural learning experience for which there is no substitute. The AS•U•GO program helps to dispel stereotypes through the personal interactions, dialogue, and activities shared between our international speakers and NC students, teachers, and community members.

AS•U•GO serves schools in the 8 counties of Appalachian State's Public School Partnership in addition to local organizations and Appalachian regional colleges and universities.

The Speaker Profiles are on our site for  faculty, teachers, and community organizations to see the range of speakers involved and to Request a Speaker Visit .  Schools are required to provide transportation to a and from campus for individual speaker requests.
