2014 International Education Week Photo Contest: “Home Away From Home”

Contest information and form instructions

The theme of the 2014 International Education Week Photo Contest—“Home Away From Home”—aims to capture the experiences, memories, and feelings shared by people as it relates to a sense of “feeling at home” in a foreign land. The pictures should reflect on your international experiences while studying abroad. Photos can be of people, places, or events that show ways in which you are immersed in the local culture.

Each submitted photograph must be accompanied by your name, location where the photo was taken, and a brief caption or description relating the submitted photo to the stated theme of “Home Away From Home”.

All entries must be submitted and received by October 20th, 2014.

Contest Rules

  1. The contest is open to ALL currently enrolled Appalachian State University students (American and International) who have or are currently participating in an international exchange or study abroad program offered through the Office of International Education and Development (OIED) at Appalachian State University.
  2. The photograph, in its entirety, must be works of original material taken by the Contest entrant. By entering the Contest, the entrant represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted photograph is an original work created solely by the entrant, that the photograph does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the photograph.
  3. The photograph must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the sponsor, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content.
  4. Submission Limit- Up to 4 photos per person.

Judging Process

The entries will be judged initially by the campus via Facebook. The photos that receive the most likes will then be judged by the IEW Photo Contest Committee in accordance with the contest description. All entries must be submitted and received by October 20th, 2014. The Office of International Education reserves the right to examine the original photograph/source material in order to confirm compliance with these rules. OIED has non-exclusive rights to document, reproduce, publish photograph entries for promotional purposes.

The IEW Photo Contest Committee will chose 3 pictures to be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners according to the following judging criteria:

  1. Relation to theme of “Home Away From Home”
  2. Creativity
  3. Photographic Quality
  4. Caption relating the picture to the theme

In the event of a tie, the entry with the highest score in the creativity criteria will be declared the winner for that place. The winners will be announced on Monday, November 17, 2014. Decisions of the judges are final and binding. Each contestant will be limited to winning one prize.

Photo Exhibit

Winning Photos and photos that received the most likes on the Facebook page will be displayed in an exhibit at Looking Glass Gallery during International Education Week November 17th – 21st, 2014.

Winners judged by the IEW Photo Contest Committee will be awarded gift cards from area businesses.

Release and waiver

Office of International Education and Development (OIED) photo/video/testimonial release and waiver

I understand that Appalachian State University ("ASU" or the "University"), through OIED, wishes to document (through photos, video, and/or written testimonials) the valuable cultural interactions and dialogues (or portions thereof) which occur on campus or at University-sponsored events off-campus. In addition, the University wishes to post photos and video clips on the University's website(s), on any official university or departmental YouTube channel or social media account such as Facebook, and/or in PowerPoint and other public presentations.

I understand I am granting non-exclusive usage rights to Appalachian State University’s Office of International Education and Development to document, reproduce, publish and photograph entries for promotional purposes to promote education abroad.

I understand I am granting non-exclusive usage rights to the Office of International Education and Development at Appalachian State University to reproduce and publish photograph entries on the OIED website and OIED promotional materials, and social media associated with OIED. All photographs chosen for promotional purposes will credit stating the photographer’s name after the photo contest judging process is complete. Copyrights will remain with the photographer.

Completion of the entry process and submission of images to OIED constitutes understanding of the conditions set forth in this document.
