Withdrawal and Program Cancellation

Participants who wish to withdraw from their program after acceptance must send an email to studyabroad@appstate.edu stating that intention to withdraw.  Once this email is received the Education Abroad office will send the student a withdrawal confirmation outlining any non-refundable program expenses. Participants may continue to accrue non-recoverable costs until official notification is received.

Faculty-Led Programs

If you cancel your participation in the program due to your withdrawal from the University or any other reason(s), you still remain obligated to pay any payment(s) scheduled to be paid prior to and/or on the official date of your official cancellation notice. The initial deposit is non-refundable regardless of the official date of your cancellation. You will not be responsible for scheduled payments that follow the official date of your cancellation.

Failure to abide by the schedule of payments (making late payments or no payments) does not constitute an official cancellation on your part, and you will be responsible for making all payments scheduled prior to the date of your written cancellation notice, including payments owed ON the date of your written cancellation.

Semester Exchanges

If you cancel your participation in the program due to your withdrawal from the University or any other reason(s), after submission of your initial deposit but before that start of the program only the initial deposit is non-refundable. Any additional expenses paid out by the student (i.e. flights, passports, visas, etc.) are the responsibility of the student and are not subject to refund by the university.

Affiliate Programs

If you cancel your participation in the program due to your withdrawal from the University or any other reason(s), after submission of your initial deposit but before that start of the program you will be subject to the Appalachian withdrawal policies as well as the Affiliate program policies.  The initial deposit to Appalachian is non-refundable regardless of the official date of your cancellation.  Students should review any additional Affiliate withdrawal policies before committing to the program. Any additional expenses paid out by the student (i.e. flights, passports, visas, etc.) are the responsibility of the student and are not subject to refund by the university.

Withdrawal after Program Start Date

Students who leave a program after the official start date for any reason there will not be a refund of fees paid or expenses incurred.  Withdrawal after the program start date may also result in a reduction or return of Financial Aid.

Program Cancellation

All Appalachian State programs are subject to modification or cancellation because of natural disasters, political instability, insufficient participation or other causes.  In the event of a program cancellation it may not be possible to refund any fees or expenses paid out.  Any additional expenses paid out by the student (i.e. flights, passports, visas, etc.) are the responsibility of the student and are not subject to refund by the university.

Cancellation Insurance

If you withdraw from the program, the cancellation policy above will apply and you will be responsible for the amount owed regardless of your financial aid eligibility. Because a withdrawal for any reason may put you at risk of financial loss, you may wish to consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance. The UNC system-wide insurance provider, HTH, offers trip cancellation insurance (Trip Protector Plan).
