Ugochi Shirley West - Nigeria

Ugochi West has over fifteen years’ experience in the community development sector, specifically focusing on women’s education, mentorship, and empowerment. Currently, Ugochi is the founder of Alvana’s Legacy for Africa (ALFA), a non-governmental organization, where she provides safe spaces to promote gender empowerment through education, mentorship, and the creation of support systems. These spaces help African women cope with sociocultural issues. Ugochi has served as the chapter president, eastern regional secretary, and national vice-president of FECA Nigeria. She now serves in an advisory capacity. She is also a senior executive assistant at Zenith Bank Plc. Ugochi is committed to the total eradication of sociocultural stereotypes, barriers, and biases facing African women. She believes that one day Africa will be a continent of hope, where gender violence and stereotypes are eliminated, equal opportunities abound, and all genders live with dignity and self-worth. Upon the completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Ugochi plans to establish physical and online safe spaces across Africa, continue girls’ and women’s education, and partner with organizations who have similar goals to enhance the ALFA mentorship program.
