Office of International Programs

Jeff Cohen serves as the Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs and Senior International Officer. Jeff directs the university’s comprehensive internationalization efforts and global engagement strategy. As a first-generation student and product of public higher education, access and student success serve as the foundation of his work as an international education administrator, researcher, and teacher. His more than 15 years of experience in higher education includes service in multiple faculty leadership and administrative positions. In 2020-2021, Dr. Cohen was selected as one of three AIEA Presidential Fellows. Through this fellowship, he explored the integration of internationalization efforts and university missions with a focus on access, inclusion, and local impact.

Dr. Cohen also serves as a Professor of Criminal Justice in the Department of Government and Justice Studies at App State. He has designed and led education abroad programs to multiple countries with a focus on comparative criminal justice, restorative justice, and (de)criminalization. Jeff’s teaching, research, and scholarship focus on the criminalization of schools and school bullying, gender and masculinities, transdisciplinary research methodology, and the transformative impact of study abroad. He is currently co-editor of a 10-book series entitled “Criminology Explains…” with University of California Press.

Born and raised in southern New Jersey, Jeff has lived and worked in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Washington State, Oregon, and New Hampshire. Jeff currently lives in Boone with his partner and their animals. In addition to traveling, Jeff enjoys snorkeling, raising chickens, and hosting barbeques.
