Tax Assistance
App State partners with the Nonresident Tax Help Group (NoRTH) to provide free tax preparation software, tools, and support to individuals with a school, nonprofit, or government email address.
STEPS:
Request your free NoRTH membership at the NoRTH website. Under membership Options, select Appalachian State University. Use your App State email address to create your account.
If you are an international student or scholar who was present in the U.S. during the tax year, you will receive an email reminder from International Student and Scholar Services and Outreach (ISSSO) in February following the close of the tax year.
If you received income during the tax year, gather your income documents and confirm your return is in scope—Seethe “Get Ready” member page.
If you were issued a Form 1042-S by App State, you will receive an email from ISSSO in February following the close of the tax year to inform you that you are a Form 1042-S recipient.
Use the Am I a Nonresident? tool on the “Learn” member page to determine your federal tax residency.
Follow the process on the “Do Your Taxes” member page for your federal tax residency status (Nonresident or Resident).
If you are a nonresident in exempt status who had had no U.S. source income during the tax year, the personalized guide will fill in your Form 8843 for you to print, sign & date, and mail.
If you need assistance, take advantage of the help options that are described on the “Get Help” member page: email assistance, online office hours, and an in-person or remote tax clinic. (ISSSO team members are not able to assist you with your taxes since they are not trained IRS volunteers.)
