Veterans and Military-Affiliated Students

For well over a decade, App State has received the Military Friendly® School designation from VIQTORY, which recognizes the university’s support of military-affiliated students. As a university, we’re proud of our commitment to military-affiliated students and as an office, we’re eager to help you explore opportunities to further your academic and professional goals through education abroad.

Questions to Consider

  • How is the US military perceived in my host country?

  • What unique perspectives can I offer my study abroad program?

  • What obligations do I have at home that I need to consider, including military, family, and school obligations?

  • Can I use my veteran’s benefits to pay for my study abroad program?

  • Have I met with an Education Abroad Advisor and with Student Veteran Services?

Veteran’s Benefits and Education Abroad

  • Exchange Program. Because of the nature of our exchange programs, you will be paying tuition directly to App State and taking courses at an institution that has an exchange agreement with App State. For this reason, they are study abroad programs that are considered to be "owned" by the univrsity, making these programs eligible for VA benefits.

  • Affiliate. Affiliates are essentially study abroad companies that operate as a third party provider to facilitate your study abroad program at a foreign institution. The VA is unlikely to certify any benefits going to a third party provider. Therefore, you would not be able to use your VA benefits with an affiliate program.

  • Faculty-Led. Our faculty-led programs are App State courses, taught by App State faculty, and collecting App State tuition. For this reason, they are study abroad programs that are considered to be “owned” by the university, making these programs eligible for VA benefits.

Resources

  • Student Veteran Services. Student Veteran Services and the Major General Edward M. Reeder Student Veteran Resource Center serve as a central hub for all things “military affiliated” at Appalachian State University. They provide programming, services, and resources to assist you for your entire higher education journey.

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill: Study Abroad Program. This official fact sheet from the Veterans Benefits Administration explores how the post-9/11 GI Bill may apply to study abroad program fees and tuition.
