- Appalachian Summer Festival - Presented by Appalachian's Office of Arts and Cultural Programs, this annual celebration of the performing and visual arts is held every July in venues across the university campus, and features an eclectic, diverse mix of music, dance, theatre, visual arts and film programming.

- Earth Fare - Organic food supermarket within walking distance of Appalachian State University
- The Jones House - Culture and community center in downtown Boone offering free summer concerts every Friday.
- First Fridays - formerly called "Art Crawl," every first Friday of the month, downtown Boone shops open their doors and present work from local artisits. Grab a friend and enjoy a beautiful evening strolling down King Street and seeing what local artists are creating. This event is free and open to all.
- Watauga County Farmer's Market - While not directly downtown, this weekly farmer's market is within walking distance to campus. Held every Saturday morning from 8am-12pm, this farmer's market is a must-do during your time in Boone. Local farms provide fresh vegetables and meat, in addition to flowers, crafts and live music.

- Blue Ridge Parkway - The Blue Ridge Parkway is the second most visited unit of the National Park Services and welcomes more than one million visitors annually. The Parkway was "born" in the NC High Country at Cumberland Knob in 1935 and it was completed at Grandfather Mountain in 1987 with the opening of the iconic Linn Cove Viaduct.
- Grandfather Mountain - Throughout Grandfather Mountain’s history, thousands of people have made a big difference in its preservation and conservation—protecting it as a wonderful place for animals like Mildred the Bear, as well as plants and people. Our ongoing efforts include everything from generating energy using solar panels to supporting bird-friendly coffee to recycling everything we possibly can.
- Greenway - This fully accessible trail is either paved or gravel surfaced and mostly flat. The Greenway welcomes walkers and runners, cyclists and wheelchairs, strollers and hikers. It follows and crosses the South Fork of the New River through open meadows and colorful forests. There's a historic ruin, plentiful resting benches, picnic tables and shelters, and interpretive signs about natural and human history. Two easy loops invite a quick stroll, one of them, with great bird-watching and flower viewing.
