Have Other Questions?

Feel free to contact international-outreach@appstate.edu with any questions about the International Friendship Program.

How long will this partnership last?

You will be paired with the same international friend until they complete their studies/work at App State, but the expected comittment is for one semester. For some, that semester will be their whole time here; for others, that could be just the start of a years-long residence.

You can indicate in our online form whether you prefer a long-term or short-term partnership.

Will my international friend speak English?

Yes. You do NOT need to speak another language to participate in the International Friendship Program. However, if you do speak another language, this is a great opportunity to practice with a native speaker!

What is the difference between a student and a scholar?

International students are enrolled in classes at App State – some will complete their entire degree at this university, while others are only visiting for a semester or two and will finish at their home university. Most of our international students are individuals in their early- to mid-20s.

International scholars are at Appalachian State University as visiting professors, researchers, or graduate students from outside the United States. They may have families of their own also living with them locally.
