First-Generation College Students

Being the first in your family to attend college can be challenging and even more so if you’re thinking of going abroad! You may have a lot of questions and concerns as you navigate this process; perhaps your family does, as well. These resources are a great first step on your journey and we’re here to help you along the way.

Questions to Consider

  • How do I convince my family of the merits of studying abroad?

  • How can I stay in contact with friends and family while I’m abroad?

  • How do I know I’m making the right choice since no one in my family has studied abroad before?

  • How can I ensure that I stay on track for graduation?

  • What resources and funding sources are available to me?

  • How do I choose a program?

Tips for Planning

  • Start planning early. We would recommend starting the planning process at least one year in advance of the term you wish to study abroad.

  • Explore your options. Attend a Study Abroad 101 session and/or meet with an advisor.

  • Meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss how education abroad can fit in with your degree plan.

  • Talk with your family about your decision to study abroad. We are happy to provide you with talking points about how an education abroad can contribute to your academic and professional goals and set you up for success in life.
