Women are not underrepresented in education abroad. In fact, they study abroad in higher numbers than men, both nationally and at App State. However, because of the differences in cultural norms, stereotypes, and legislation, women travelers may find themselves frustrated or uncomfortable when navigating their new host community. The resources provided here can help you to be better equipped to handle these situations during your travels.
Questions to Consider
How will my experience as a woman abroad differ from my experience as a woman in the US?
Is it safe for me to go out alone, either during the day or at night? What areas, if any, should I avoid?
How are women expected to behave in my host country? How do they typically dress? To what extent do I want to conform to this expectation?
How do my values regarding gender roles compare to the values held by my host community? Based on this comparison, do I foresee any challenges?
What are the cultural norms regarding friendship and dating?
What stereotypes of American women exist in my host country?
What is my plan for access to contraceptives? Feminine hygiene products?
