Student Athletes

Student athletes have a lot to juggle between training, competing, and academics, however they can still participate in study abroad programs during their time in college. Studying abroad offers an unmatched global experience that expands the student athlete beyond their sport.

OIP is committed to helping student athletes find a program that enables them to make continued progress towards their degree while still allowing them to compete.

Frequently asked questions when planning an international experience

  • When should a student athlete speak with an advisor about plans to study abroad?

    • If a student athlete is interested in studying abroad, they should speak with an advisor their freshman year, or as soon as they are interested. Speaking with an advisor early on will allow you to plan your four years to incorporate a global experience around the demanding schedule of a student athlete. You can schedule an appointment here.

    • It may also be helpful to communicate with coaches, teammates, and guardians in advance.

  • When is the best time to study abroad based on your training and playing schedule?

    • Study abroad programs are available in the spring/fall/academic year as well as during the spring and winter breaks and summer sessions. Your sport and the season that you play in will determine the best time for you to study abroad.

    • Typically it is not possible to study abroad until your junior or senior year as a student athlete, once a majority of your course requirements have been met.

  • How can a student athlete fund an international experience?

    • There are various funding resources available for students looking to study abroad. Students participating in semester study abroad programs will be eligible to apply their normal semester financial aid package to their program costs. Students are also encouraged to research additional scholarship opportunities

    • Additional athletics funding sources could be available for qualified students. See your team's sport administrator for more information.

  • Do NCAA Compliance and Eligibility rules still apply when overseas?

    • As student athletes, there are certain rules you must adhere to regarding monetary compensation, accepting “gifts,” coaching, competing in events not sanctioned by the NCAA, etc. These regulations can get complicated while you are overseas. Please speak with the staff of Appalachian State Athletics Compliance for more clarification.

  • If I have nutritional needs, is it still possible to study abroad?

    • Yes, student athletes who may have food allergies and nutritional needs for performance can still participate in a study abroad program. Depending on your host country and region, your eating patterns may change.

    • We recommend consulting with App State Performance Nutrition to create a nutrition plan prior to your departure if you expect your food selections to change while abroad. Additionally, upon your return, we recommend following up with your nutritionist to discuss responsible and healthy steps that will ensure optimal health and nutrition for your sport.

  • How can I continue to train for my sport while studying abroad?

    • It is the athlete’s responsibility to maintain good physical condition for the duration of their global experience. Speak with your host university / program provider about the training and athletic facilities you may have access to in your host community. You can also create a workout plan with your strength and conditioning coaches before leaving.
