What is Mountain-To-Mountain?


Appalachian State University (Appalachian) and the University of the Free State (UFS) - Qwaqwa are implementing a Mountain-to-Mountain Collaboration, under the U.S. University Partnership Initiative in South Africa funded through the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in South Africa. Implementation of the project officially commenced in September 2019.

The goal of the project is to strengthen the existing partnership between Appalachian in the U.S. and UFS in South Africa. The goal of the project is being achieved through four specific objectives which are: Develop and offer a Multidisciplinary Master's degree in Mountain Studies program at the UFS – Qwaqwa Campus; develop and offer a Master's in Community Development Degree program at the UFS – Qwaqwa Campus; conduct three to four joint Mountain-to-Mountain research projects in the Appalachian Mountains (U.S.) and the Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains (South Africa); and establish and offer a formal leadership mentorship program at UFS for younger black women in academia.
