Intensive Language Courses

AppELS Institute’s dynamic curriculum is content-based, which means our courses are specifically preparing you for success in your future university studies. You can improve your English speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation while studying topics like Biology, Anthropology, Economics, Technology, and Business. Sample courses include: English for Literature, English for Humanities, English for STEAM, American Culture, and Current Events.  

AppELS Institute offers four levels of instruction:  Intermediate, High-Intermediate 1, High-Intermediate 2, and Advanced. Before arrival, students will take our online placement test to ensure registration into the right courses. 

Each level includes four core courses in addition to a Writing Lab, a Project Lab, and a Culture and Service course.

Cultural engagement is integral to the AppELS Institute and Appalachian State University experience. It’s who we are!

Experiential Learning

At AppELS Institute, your language learning is not limited to a classroom. From the very first day, students engage in hands-on research, project-based work, service-learning, field trips, and community involvement. Experiential learning gives you context in which your skills and knowledge can take off.
