Planning
Planning your Program: 

The best time for a LLC German major to go abroad will be a combination of their concentration, credits they have transferred in, whether they have a dual major or a minor, whether they plan on taking any summer classes, and obviously their personal situation.  Students should decide whether they want to spend a semester/year or a summer abroad and start working with their advisor early on to plan for the experience. 

Course Considerations: 

LLC German majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for at least a semester but are required to complete a minimum of 3-6 hours in a study abroad program or international internship relevant to their program of study and approved prior to departure by the advisor. This requirement may be waived by petition for those able to demonstrate a similarly significant, structured international education experience. Study abroad internship courses may be counted toward the BA Degree.

Students should contact their departmental advisor to schedule an advising appointment.

Key questions to ask?

  • What are my remaining degree requirements?
  • How many upper-division credits do I still need to complete for my degree?
  • How many elective credits (lower vs. upper division) do I have left to complete my major?
  • What remaining prerequisites must I fulfill, and how will study abroad impact my progress?
  • Which of my remaining degree requirements could I complete abroad? Are there any that I cannot take abroad?
  • Can I receive academic credit for an internship abroad?
  • Are there any in-residence requirements I need to be aware of before I go abroad?

LLC German students are able to participate on department faculty-led programs,  summer partner programs, and on semester programs.  Listed below are some possible options.

All faculty-led programs for fall 2021 have been suspended due to the ongoing pandemic. Please check back beginning in summer 2021 for updates about faculty-led programs for Spring Break and Summer I & II 2022.

Germany's Great Cities: Trier and Berlin

  • Program Type: Faculty-led
  • Available Terms: Summer
  • Country:: Germany
  • Standing: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: This intensive, all-in-German, study abroad program puts you face-to-face with the German language and culture and with Germany and the European Union, past and present. You will systematically improve your German skills and cultural understanding through regular classes, interacting with Germans around town, visits to museums, structured study trips, and hands-on activities that engage you with our two Great Cities. Students will take 1040/1050 or 2050/2055.

University of Innsbruck

  • Unique Feature: Advanced language students can select from a wide range of courses taught in German.  Students will little to no German may be able to take courses taught in English along with an introductory German language course.   

Baden-Wuerttemberg UNC Partnership

  • Program Type: Exchange

  • Unique Feature: Serving all of theUniversity of North Carolina System’s diverse campuses, the BW/NC Exchange Program was formed in 1996. We established study abroad exchange partnerships between the state of North Carolina’s 15 University campuses and the 9 Baden-Württemberg Universities in Germany.

Padagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe

  • Program Type: Exchange
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Spring

  • Unique Feature: Students can take German language alongside regular university coursework taught in German and during the spring semester Karlsruhe offers selected electives taught in English. 

University of Bamberg

  • Unique Feature: Students can take German language alongside electives taught in English. Advanced language students can take all of their coursework in German. 

University of Trier

  • Unique Feature: Students can take German language alongside regular university coursework taught in German and a few selected options taught in English. 

Research

ISA Euroscholars

  • Available Terms: Fall, Spring

  • Highlights: EuroScholars is a unique research abroad programme designed for advanced and talented undergraduate students from US and Canadian institutions looking for an international research experience. In this programme, students have the opportunity to undertake one course in the classroom and then work under the direct supervision of professors and other academic staff on a specific academic research project chosen by both the student and the faculty.

Global Experiences Internship in Berlin

  • Unique Features: Internships are available during the summer and semester.  Students can complete just an internship or add on additional courses.
