Hosting a Fulbright Scholar at App State

Hosting a Fulbright Scholar at App State

Hosting a Fulbright Scholar from another country is a great way for your department to reach its global engagement goals. We have outlined some helpful steps that are required to host a Fulbright scholar.

Meeting with OIED

Once it is determined that you will be hosting a Fulbright scholar in your department, please reach out to Chrissie Faupel at to schedule a meeting with you and your department chair. We will discuss the process for hosting a Fulbright scholar, your responsibilities, OIED's responsibilities, and Fulbright's responsibilities.

Letter of Support

Faculty may be contacted by a prospective Fulbright scholar who would like to be hosted at App State, or an App State faculty may have a collaboration with an international scholar whom they would like to invite. This should be discussed with the department chair as to whether the prospective scholar’s research interests or proposed activities are within the department’s capacity and whether there is interest in hosting a Fulbright scholar. Once this is established, OIED will issue a letter of support that the Fulbright scholar will require for their application. Please contact Chrissie Faupel at to request this letter.

The costs to host a Fulbright scholar are minimal. They receive a stipend for living expenses as part of their Fulbright award. Fulbright also covers travel expenses to the U.S., visa processing fees, and health insurance.

Pending availability, OIED may be able to provide housing for the Fulbright scholar in one of our international scholar housing units. This is not guaranteed as space is limited; please reach out as soon as possible to OIED to request a spot.

Fulbright scholars are sponsored by the Fulbright Commission, which issues their visa documentation. OIED is not involved in the visa process for Fulbright scholars.

Airport Pick-Up

The department will be responsible for arranging transportation for the Fulbright scholar from the airport to App State's campus (and back to the airport at the end of their stay).

System Access

It is the department's responsibility to ensure the Fulbright scholar has access to the appropriate App State systems. To do this, you must complete the Non-Employee Affiliate Request Form for the Fulbright scholar to be given access to email and university facilities. Once this request is approved, the scholar will be given a username and be eligible to set up an App State email account and apply for an App Card. The non-employee user account request form can be found here.

Department Orientation & Office Space

It is the department's responsibility to ensure that the Fulbright scholar has physical space within the department to accomplish their goals while on campus. We would recommend providing the Fulbright scholar with an orientation to the department and its personnel so that they will be set up for success.
