Communication Sciences and Disorders

Message from Department

"The Department Communication Sciences and Disorders encourages students to pursue study abroad opportunities that allow them to gain a broader perspective on global health practices and the cultural, linguistic and social differences that exist in various regions of the world.  During a semester-long or summer study abroad experience, students can complete courses that satisfy general course requirements such as free electives, GenEd  requirements, or coursework required for an Academic Interest Area or Minor.  Additionally, at selected study-abroad sites (e.g., Southern Cross University, Macquarie University, University of Canterbury, etc) students can complete courses that satisfy CSD major course requirements.  Whether a student completes general course requirements or requirements specific to the major, the study abroad program can greatly enhance the overall academic experience and provide an invaluable opportunity for personal and professional growth."

Planning
Planning your Program:

The best time for a CSD major to participate on a semester program is during the summer or the 2nd semester of their junior year.  Students often take General Education (LSE), Minor courses, Electives, and Academic Interest Area requirements while abroad. It may be possible to fulfill specific CSD requirements on a semester program but students should work closely with their advisor.  CSD majors often participate on short-term faculty-led and partner summer programs.

Course Considerations:

Students looking to participate in a semester or non CSD faculty-led program can also look to satisfy General Education requirements.  It is suggested that students save 1 or 2 LSE requirements for their study abroad program. It may be possible to satisfy an ILE, Science Inquiry, or Quantitative Literacy course but this requires more advanced planning.

Advising:

Students should email Daniel Byrd to schedule an advising appointment.

Key questions to ask?

  • What are my remaining degree requirements?
  • How many upper-division credits do I still need to complete for my degree?
  • How many elective credits (lower vs. upper division) do I have left to complete my major?
  • What remaining prerequisites must I fulfill, and how will study abroad impact my progress?
  • Which of my remaining degree requirements could I complete abroad? Are there any that I cannot take abroad?
  • Can I receive academic credit for an internship abroad?
  • Are there any in-residence requirements I need to be aware of before I go abroad?
