Planning your Program: 

The best time for a LLC - Spanish student to go abroad will be a combination of their concentration, credits they have transferred in, whether they have a dual major or a minor, whether they plan on taking any summer classes, and obviously their personal situation.  Listed below are some suggested time frames for each concentration. Students looking to go abroad during a different period are encouraged to work closely with their department advisor and the Education Abroad Office.

For all concentrations short-term study abroad opportunities are normally fairly easy to fit into a student’s degree plan.  Students are able to start participating on short-term programs (winter break, spring break, and summer) as early as their first year. 

BS Spanish Education

Due to education certification requirements Spanish Education majors often study abroad during the 2nd semester of their 2nd year or during the summer.  Students should work closely with their department to plan their study abroad experience.

BA Spanish and Hispanic Studies

Spanish and Hispanic Studies majors often study abroad beginning their 2nd year through their final year on faculty-led, summer partner, and semester/year-long programs. 

Course Considerations: 

LLC majors may not be able to complete Capstone requirements abroad, although this is up to the discretion of the department.. Other courses that students may want to plan to take before or after their abroad experience are _______. 

Students also can look to satisfy General Education and/or Minor requirements.  It is suggested that students save 1 or 2 LSE requirements for their study abroad program.  It may be possible to satisfy an ILE, Science Inquiry, or Quantitative Literacy course but this requires more advanced planning.

Students should contact their departmental advisor to schedule an advising appointment.

Key questions to ask?

  • What are my remaining degree requirements?
  • How many upper-division credits do I still need to complete for my degree?
  • How many elective credits (lower vs. upper division) do I have left to complete my major?
  • What remaining prerequisites must I fulfill, and how will study abroad impact my progress?
  • Which of my remaining degree requirements could I complete abroad? Are there any that I cannot take abroad?
  • Can I receive academic credit for an internship abroad?
  • Are there any in-residence requirements I need to be aware of before I go abroad?
Programs

LLC - Spanish students are able to participate on department faculty-led programs,  summer partner programs, and on semester programs.  Listed below are some possible options.

Program Type Information

Faculty-led

All faculty-led programs for fall 2021 have been suspended due to the ongoing pandemic. Please check back beginning in summer 2021 for updates about faculty-led programs for Spring Break and Summer I & II 2022.

Languages and Culture of Northern Spain

  • Country: Spain
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: This is a five-week program of Spanish language instruction (SNH 1040, SNH 1050) with a cultural focus on the language policies, attitudes, and regional identities of Northern Spain, particularly the Basque Country and Catalonia. Thus, besides our residency in the northern coastal city of Santander, the program includes trips to both Bilbao and Barcelona. Students will live with local host families in order to maximize exposure to Spanish, with class time in the mornings and ample time to take advantage of the mountains and beaches of Northern Spain. 

Summer Study in Madrid

  • Country: Spain
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: This program is meant to satisfy the academic needs of our students of Spanish, especially Spanish minors and majors, while providing a significant and direct experience of living and traveling in one of the most relevant Spanish speaking countries. It offers students the possibility to enroll in one conversation course and one Spanish elective class in culture at the 2000, 3000 and 4000 levels for a total of six (6) credits. These courses, the excursions, the out-of-classroom cultural activities, and the lodging arrangements with selected Spanish families in Madrid, are planned in order to develop a personal experience with the Spanish culture and history, and to improve the students abilities to interact in the Spanish language. The program has been successfully running for decades. Students will take either SNH 2010 or SNH 4075 along with SNH 3530 or SNH 3250.  

Short-term

Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso

  • Program Type: Full Exchange
  • Country: Chile
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: PUCV offers Spanish language and culture courses at the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels.  Students participating on the PUCV summer program will enroll in 2 courses per 4 week summer session for a total of 6 credits per session.

Veritas 

  • Program Type: Partner
  • Country: Costa Rica
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Students can take intensive Spanish language coursework along with Spanish and English taught electives.  Veritas offers two 4 week summer sessions. 

Semester

Intensive Spanish language (beginner through advanced)

Universidad de Cantabria (North Carolina Consortium Program)

  • Program Type: Partner (Consortium)
  • Available Terms: Fall, Spring
  • Country: Spain
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Program is designed for students who have completed 1050 or 1060 prior to going abroad and who want to finish their minor in one semester.  Students will take 12-15 credits of Spanish language courses on this program. Students will stay in homestays. 

Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso

  • Program Type: Full Exchange
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Chile
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Offers all levels of Spanish language in the international program but best suited to Intermediate and Advanced students.  Students will take Spanish language courses (1-3 courses per level) in addition to electives taught in Spanish (with a few offerings in English).  Students with upper level language ability are able to enroll directly in regular PUCV courses. Students will stay in homestays. 

Veritas 

  • Program Type: Partner
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Costa Rica
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Students can take intensive Spanish language coursework up to 10 credits along with Spanish and English taught electives.  Students with upper level Spanish can enroll directly in the normal university course offerings. Students will stay in homestays. 

USAC Heredia

  • Program Type: Affiliate
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Costa Rica
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Students will take 6-12 credits of Spanish language (varies by track) as well as electives focusing on Latin America taught in Spanish and English.  Students will stay in homestays. 

USAC Puntarenas

  • Program Type: Affiliate
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Costa Rica
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Students will take 6-12 credits of Spanish language (varies by track) as well as electives focusing on Latin America and Ecology taught in Spanish and English.  Students will stay in homestays. 

Universidad de las Americas Puebla

  • Program Type: Full Exchange
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Mexico
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Offers courses taught in Spanish for advanced students as well as English-taught offerings.  Students are also able to take Spanish language coursework (3-6 credits in core language courses) plus electives in Spanish depending on language level.  Students looking to take regular university courses taught in Spanish should have completed one or more Spanish courses at the 3000 level prior to going abroad.

ISA Salamanca

  • Program Type: Affiliate
  • Available Terms: Fall, Spring
  • Country: Spain
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Offers an intensive language track with core Spanish coursework and electives taught in Spanish.  

Universidad Pablo de Olavide

  • Program Type: Basic Exchange 
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Spain
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Language: Students can study Spanish on this program (normally take a core Spanish course and Conversation).  Additional electives taught in Spanish and English. Students looking to take courses taught in Spanish in the regular university should have completed one or more Spanish courses at the 3000 level prior to going abroad.

USAC Uruguay

  • Program Type: Affiliate
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Uruguay
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature:  Students will take 6-12 credits of Spanish language (varies by track) as well as electives focusing on Latin America and Agriculture taught in Spanish and English.  Students have the option of homestays. 

For Advanced students 

Universidad Nacional de Cuyo

  • Program Type: Full Exchange
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
  • Country: Argentina
  • Standing: 2nd Semester Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Program is best suited for upper level language students as all of the coursework at UNCUYO is offered in Spanish.  Students can also take an intensive Spanish language class (3-6 credits) during the semester. Homestays available. 

Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso

  • Unique Feature: Students can take Spanish language during the semester (3-6 credits). Students will then take coursework taught in Spanish across the normal UQROO departments.  Students should be at the advanced level.  Homestays may be available. 

Universidad de Alicante

  • Program Type: Basic Exchange
  • Available Terms: Academic Year, Spring
  • Country: Spain
  • Standing: Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • Unique Feature: Alicante offers most degree programs in Spanish but do also offer a selection of courses taught in English.  Students looking to take courses taught in Spanish should have advanced language skills.  Students are also able to take a 3 credit Spanish language course during the semester.  

Universidad de Salamanca

  • Unique Feature: Direct enroll program for students with advanced Spanish.
