About the Global Leadership Awards
The Global Leadership Awards Program is an annual award to recognize students, faculty, and staff who have made a significant contribution to advance global learning at App State. This award recognizes extraordinary contributions of campus partners who have initiated, developed and/or supported opportunities for global learning.
Awards and Guidelines
Deadline for nominations is Monday, October 20, 2025.
Purpose: To promote global knowledge, intercultural skills, and global citizenship for our students and the campus community. This award recognizes extraordinary contributions of faculty and staff who have initiated, developed and/or supported opportunities for global learning. Awardees will receive an OIP travel grant to support their continued global engagement.
Eligibility
- All current full-time App State staff, faculty and administrators, except:
- Individuals who were an award recipient in the previous five years.
- Members of the Global Symposium Planning Committee.
- OIP staff/faculty.
- Self-nominations are discouraged.
Guidelines and Criteria:
- Nominators should provide evidence of the nominee’s sustained engagement in global learning and engagement in ways that benefit App State students, faculty, staff, and communities.
- Nominators should provide evidence of nominee’s substantial contributions in one or more of the following areas:
- Internationalizing the campus and community environment: international festivals, global communities in the residence halls, developing technology for internationalization, supporting international students on campus and in the community, organizing conferences with global themes on campus, bringing international visitors to the area, outreach to schools and local communities, etc.
- Expanding global learning opportunities for students: short–term overseas programs, study abroad, curricular development, student service learning, internships, research, etc.
- Building and/or sustaining global partnerships: institutional partnerships, hosting international delegations, serving as a host family for international students/visitors, faculty or student exchanges, collaborative projects, etc.
- Research and scholarship with a global emphasis: faculty development, grant writing, publication, presentation, conference organization, mentoring students in international research, etc.
- Other activities that promote global knowledge, intercultural skills, or global citizenship.

Eligibility
- All current App State undergraduate or graduate students, except past Global Leadership Award recipients.
- Self-nominations are discouraged.
Guidelines
- The awards committee will look for students who have demonstrated excellence as a global ambassador or global citizen, as defined here:
- Global ambassadors are students who demonstrate significant leadership while connecting activities away from App State campuses to increased global awareness among App State communities.
- Global citizens are students who have demonstrated significant leadership on App State campuses to increase global awareness among App State communities.
Criteria Options
- Nominators should provide evidence of nominee’s excellence as either a global ambassador or global citizen in one or more of the following areas:
- Globalization of campus and/or community environment: international festivals, global communities in the residence halls, utilizing technology for internationalization, supporting international students on campus and in the community, outreach to schools and local community, involvement in global conferences and arts events etc.
- Leadership in global learning opportunities for students: exemplary participation in and promotion of short-term and semester/year/summer study abroad experiences, student service learning, internships, etc.
- Research and scholarship with a global emphasis: virtual and mobility-based global scholarship or research projects, campus- or community-based global learning scholarship or research projects, etc.
- Other activities that promote global knowledge, intercultural skills, or global citizenship.
